I remember my first English sentence to a stranger.

My mouth felt dry and my hands were cold.

But I needed to ask for directions.

The words came out slow and strange.

In that moment, a bridge appeared between us.

I was not perfect, but I was understood.

That feeling gave me courage for the next try.

Now I think about that day often.
